Opis predmeta:
The aim of the course is to offer students a historical account of how the concept of human rights has developed as a political ideal invoked in different political struggles. Unlike a juristic approach that gives an insight into the development of human rights as a part of international and national legal frameworks or the philosophical account that offers insights into the very nature and logic of the concept, this course will concentrate on those political struggles and controversies that shaped the understanding of human rights we have today. In the seminar the students will be involved in a simulation of preparing work documentation for UN Human Rights Council on one of the following topics: torture + extraordinary renditions, human rights + drone strikes, genocide + humanitarian intervention, cultural relativism + group rights, human trafficking, human rights + the environment, sexual minority rights.

Dear students,

due to worsening epidemic situation in Croatia, Faculty of Political Science at the University of Zagreb is switching to on-line classes. We will continue to have both the lectures and seminars on Mondays from 11:45 to 14:15, but we’ll do it on-line through Microsoft Teams. For all of you who have already been following the class on-line every second week or full-time, nothing much changes. For those who have been attending the classes at the Faculty, you will need to switch to on-line class. All of you will log in through your MT account at 11:45 to join the lecture. I’ll be in my office at the Faculty or at my home office, but you should all be able to hear and see both me and the presentation on your screen. Our chat bar will also be available, so you can ask questions or comment anytime during the lecture (please either type “question” or “comment” in the chat and I can turn on your mic, or you can type in your question or comment and I will read it out loud). Lecture will end around 12:50 or 13:00.

As usual, we’ll take a ten minute break and after that we’ll continue with the seminar. Each group will have 40-50 minutes available for presentation after which we’ll open the floor for the discussion. Presenters will present on-line in the same way that did in the classroom: we will all be able to see them and hear them and see their presentation. During the discussion, students can ask a question or comment in two ways: either by typing “question” or “comment” in the chat (after that I will turn on your mic and you can ask a question) or by typing in their question or comment. The presenters will have a chance to respond. It is important that all students have functioning cameras and mics, but especially those who are presenting that week (please test your equipment before joining the class).

Hopefully, we will be able to have a productive lectures and seminars on-line, but considering that this is the first time that we are doing everything on-line I would like to ask you for a bit of patience if something doesn’t work right away. I’ll try to solve it as soon as possible.

I’ll see you soon. Take care,

Enes
